Q 1. Kindly give our readers an introduction to your business. Please include what your business is all about, in which city you are located and if you have offices in multiple locations/ cities.
Ans: We are P&D HVAC, a local heating and cooling contractor serving the families and businesses of Northwest Arkansas. Based right here in the community, we operate out of a single, focused location to ensure that our quality never dips. Our business isn’t just about fixing air conditioners; it’s about providing a new standard of service rooted in integrity, honesty, and education. We specialize in diagnosing the “why” behind a system failure, ensuring our neighbors receive true peace of mind rather than just a quick sales pitch.
Q 2. Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).
Ans: P&D HVAC is led by the combined expertise of Pam and David. David brings over 35 years of deep industry experience to the table, having mastered the technical and service nuances of HVAC since the late 80s. Pam provides the strategic business backbone, with the two of us sharing over 60 years of total business leadership experience. One of our proudest achievements is being recognized as an Elite Heil Dealer and building a company where over 95% of our growth comes directly from satisfied customer referrals.
Q 3. What inspired you to start a new business venture? How did the idea for your business come about?
Ans: The idea for P&D HVAC—named simply after our initials—was born in 2018 out of a desire to return to “old roots.” We saw too many “big box” companies in Northwest Arkansas using scare tactics and high-pressure sales to force replacements on homeowners who didn’t need them. We knew there was a hunger for a contractor who would treat customers like family. We wanted to build a company that stands behind its work and stays small enough to ensure the owner can still personally guarantee every installation.
Q 4. What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Ans: 1. Lead with Education: Don’t just sell a product; empower your customers with knowledge. When they understand the “how” and “why,” trust follows naturally.
2. Focus on the Referral: A single happy customer who tells their neighbor is worth more than a dozen expensive billboards. Build your business one handshake at a time.
3. Hire for Fit, Not Just Skill: We only select candidates who are a great overall fit for our culture of integrity. You can teach a skill, but you can’t teach honesty.
Q 5. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Ans: • Empathy: You have to be able to step into the customer’s shoes, especially when they are stressed because their heat went out in the dead of winter.
• Decisiveness: You need the confidence to stand behind your work and your diagnosis, even when others are taking the easy way out.
• Relatability: Being a “wise neighbor” rather than an unattached corporate entity makes you approachable and trustworthy.
Q 6. How many hours do you work a day on average?
Ans: As owners of a service-based business, we are essentially “on” whenever our customers need us. While the office hours are standard, the commitment to being there for our clients when others won’t means we are always steering the ship, often putting in 10- to 12-hour days to ensure every job meets the P&D standard.
Q 7. To what do you most attribute your success?
Ans: Honesty, plain and simple. In an industry often clouded by technical jargon and “black box” pricing, we chose to be transparent. Our success is a direct result of our neighbors realizing that we aren’t looking for a quick sale; we’re looking for a long-term relationship.
Q 8. How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
Ans: We avoid the “noise” of traditional, aggressive advertising. Our marketing is focused on community-driven platforms where our reputation can be validated, like local Facebook groups and Nextdoor. However, our most successful form of marketing has always been word-of-mouth. When you do a top-notch job and guarantee it, your customers become your best advocates.
Q 9. Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?
Ans: P&D HVAC was built on the foundation of our own decades of experience and personal investment. We didn’t seek out external investors because we wanted to maintain total control over our service standards. By growing “moderately small” on purpose, we’ve been able to fund our expansion through our own success and the loyalty of our referral base.
Q 10. What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
Ans: Prioritize customer service first and HVAC second. If you focus on making the customer happy and ensuring their home is safe, the technical side of the business takes care of itself. Consistency in your values is the only way to stay relevant for decades.
Q 11. Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
Ans: We see P&D HVAC continuing to operate under our current successful model—serving thousands more neighbors in Northwest Arkansas while maintaining that “small-town feel.” We don’t want to be the biggest; we want to be the most trusted.
Q 12. Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
Ans: We admire local businesses that have stood the test of time by sticking to their “old roots.” Any company that prioritizes quality over high-volume “big box” efficiency is a kindred spirit to us.
Q 13. How important have good employees been to your success?
Ans: They are everything. We treat our team like family because happy employees provide better service. We only hire those who share our passion for integrity, because they are the ones walking into our customers’ homes representing the P&D name.
Q 14. What motivates you?
Ans: Providing “peace of mind.” There is nothing more satisfying than walking into a home where a family is stressed and sweaty because of a broken AC, and leaving them cool, informed, and relieved because we found a simple fix the other guys missed.
Q 15. How do you define success?
Ans: Success is being the first name a neighbor gives when someone asks, “Do you know an honest HVAC person?” It’s the trust our community places in us.
Q 16. What kind of culture exists in your organization?
Ans: It’s a culture of passionate, direct, and relatable professionals. We have a “humor dial” of about 7/10—we like to keep things lighthearted and human, but we are dead serious about the quality of our work.
Q 17. In one word, characterize your life as an entrepreneur.
Ans: Guaranteed. (We stand behind everything we do, every single day.)
