Q: Kindly give our readers an introduction to your business. Please include what your business is all about, in which city you are located, and if you have offices in multiple locations/ cities.
A: Maw N Paw Kettlekorn started out of a love for popcorn, small business, and serving your local community. Established in 1999, we’ve been popping fresh, handcrafted gourmet kettle corn ever since–now offering over 30 delicious flavors, from classic sweet-and-salty to cheese, fruity, and chocolate-drizzled varieties like our bestselling Zebra. We’re all about bringing joy through high-quality, small-batch popcorn that puts smiles on faces. We’re proudly located in Laguna Hills, California (in beautiful Orange County), with our retail store at 24881 Alicia Parkway. We don’t have offices or stores in multiple locations–this one spot is our home base, where all the magic happens!
Q: Kindly give us a brief description of yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).
A: Maw N Paw Kettlekorn was started by entrepreneurs, and to this day is still run by the same small core family team. We all wear different hats and have multiple ventures that we are working on and in. You could say that the store is the base for a lot of creative energy, and ultimately a labor of love. Our major achievements include building a loyal following over 25+ years, expanding from classic kettle corn to more than 30 unique flavors, becoming a go-to spot for gifts and events in Southern California, and keeping our handmade quality consistent while delighting generations of customers–who keep coming back and spreading the word.
Q: What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (make significant changes in an existing business)Q: How did the idea for your business come about?
A: We were inspired by watching kettle corn vendors at local fairs and events, popping fresh batches that drew huge crowds with that irresistible sweet-and-salty aroma. It sparked the idea: why not bring that joy to our community year-roundQ: The business came about in early 1999 when we saw a need for unique, high-quality gourmet popcorn in our area. Starting small with our original recipe, we opened our shop in Laguna Hills and focused on handcrafting every batch. What began as a passion for great snacks and connecting with people quickly turned into a beloved family-run venture–we just couldn’t resist sharing those smiles one kernel at a time!
Q: What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
A:
• Start small and stay true to what you love–passion is what keeps you going through the tough days.
• Build strong relationships in your community; word-of-mouth from happy customers is priceless.
• Be ready to wear many hats and adapt–flexibility and hard work turn ideas into lasting businesses.
Q: What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
A:
• Resilience–the ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep popping (literally and figuratively!).
• People skills–connecting with customers, suppliers, and your team builds loyalty and opens doors.
• Creativity–whether it’s tweaking recipes, solving problems, or finding new ways to market, thinking outside the box keeps things fresh.
Q: How many hours do you work a day on average?
A: As a family-run operation, it varies a lot depending on the season and events, but on average, I’d say 10-12 hours a day. When you’re passionate about what you do and it’s a labor of love, it doesn’t always feel like “work”–but we definitely put in the time to keep things running smoothly and delight our customers.
Q: To what do you most attribute your success?
A: Our success comes down to consistency, family teamwork, and genuine care for our community. We’ve been using the same cherished recipe since 1999, staying committed to quality, and treating every customer like a neighbor. The support from our loyal locals over the years has been incredible–it’s their smiles and repeat visits that have kept us going strong for more than 25 years.
Q: How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
A: We keep marketing simple and community-focused: farmers’ markets, local events, festivals, and good old-fashioned word-of-mouth. We also love social media to share fun popping videos, customer photos, and event updates. By far, our most successful form has been direct interaction at events–nothing beats handing out fresh samples and seeing people’s reactions firsthand. That personal touch turns first-time tasters into lifelong fans.
Q: Where did your organization’s funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting itQ: How did you obtain investors for your venture?
A: We bootstrapped Maw N Paw Kettlekorn entirely from our own family savings and early sales–no outside investors or loans needed. It was a true grassroots start: we began small, reinvested every dollar earned from those first market days, and grew organically over time. Keeping it family-funded has allowed us to stay independent and make decisions that align with our values.
Q: What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
A: Stay consistent with your quality and values, nurture relationships with your customers and community, and never stop enjoying what you do. Long-term success isn’t about quick growth–it’s about building something sustainable that brings joy to others (and yourself) year after year.
Q: Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
A: We plan to keep doing what we love: popping fresh kettle corn, serving our local community, and spreading smiles at events. In 5-10 years, I’d love to see us expanding our reach a bit more–perhaps a few more permanent locations or partnerships–while staying true to our family roots and small-batch charm. Ultimately, as long as we’re still having fun and making people happy, we’ll be right where we want to be.
Q: Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
A: Honestly, some of the businesses I admire most belong to close friends of ours who are fellow entrepreneurs here in Orange County. They’ve poured their hearts into building small, local, family-run ventures just like we have, and watching their dedication and the positive impact they’ve made on our community over the years is truly inspiring.
