The founder of CableEx, Chris Alonzo, started CableEx after nearly a decade of experience in corporate Americas business to business sales world. Chris worked for many major internet service provider companies including AT&T, Comcast Business, Century Link, and Lumen. Chris’s experience is vast, he has held positions in both inside and outside business sales, inbound calls as well as outbound calling, mid-large business account management and rose in the ranks, taking on a leadership role as manager of mid-large business account relationship managers. All the while, after work every day Chris would work at night as an electrician. Where he learned the ins and out of electrical, cable running, and electrical component installation which eventually led him to take on a project running network cable for a doctor’s office. On this project Chris was part of a team that ran more than 100 network cables to multiple cable drop points, built a network IT room and placed access points throughout the facility for wireless internet connectivity. This project brought Chris to his turning point, and he decided it was time to venture on his own. Taking all his business, electrical and network cabling experience including college education, where he studied English, Business and Psychology, CableEx was born.
- What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?
As an opportunist, I saw challenge and opportunity in starting a business that focused on delivering a service that was detrimental to the success of other businesses. The idea derived as I seen an opportunity to implement my experience and be successful doing so.
- What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
My advice for starting entrepreneurs would be to learn a skill, trade, service enough to be dangerous and be willing to learn along the way. Take risks, be fearless and figure it, whatever it is, out. Plan, execute and then reflect on what transpired and how things could have been more efficient or what might you do differently next time around.
- What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Resilient, because bad things will happen. You must know how to find the good in the bad and make something from nothing.
Adaptable, the only guarantee in life is change. You must be able to pivot. Whether that is to the marketplace, relationships, business, in general adapt.
Self-improve; strive to be better every day. Stay up on your health, always be learning, and challenge yourself.
- How many hours do you work a day on average?
On average I work about 14 hours per day.
- To what do you most attribute to your success?
My resilience and ability to learn and implement what I have learned.
- How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
The greatest investment I have ever made was SEO. In the age of smartphones and Google. Having a digital footprint is required. If you cannot be found online, you don’t exist.
- Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?
I started CableEx with a $2000 loan from a friend, which I used to create our website and start our digital footprint. Since then we have been bootstrapped (self-funded and our capital comes from the revenue we earn from our installations.
- What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
Long-term success is determined by your systems. Continue to do what works, do what you say you’re going to do, adapt to change, and take reasonable risks. Then, repeat the process.
- Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
CableEx will expand across the nation and have many branches in growing major cities installing network cabling, fiber optics and the future of today’s technology.
- Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
I admire Comcast the most. They focus on culture and they are always improving and growing their services.
