• Kindly give our readers an introduction to your business. Please include what your business is all about, in which city you are located and if you have offices in multiple locations/ cities.
Founded by first responders, Merciful Towing provides light, medium, and heavy-duty towing services. We are dedicated to our customers having the best experience with us on their worst days on the road. Our team is professional, compassionate, reliable, and timely. Our office is located in Oak Grove, KY, but we serve the surrounding areas as well, including Cadiz, Clarksville, Fort Campbell, and Hopkinsville.
• Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).
My name is Matthew Riddle. I have been in the towing industry since 2004. Before I moved into towing full-time, I was working in law enforcement. I bring a different perspective because of my experience as a first responder. My goal is to offer the absolute best experience for customers in heavy-duty towing and recovery, changing the industry for the better.
• What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?
After working on the roadside as a first responder, I was inspired to change the face of towing by starting a different kind of towing company. Compassionate customer care is at the center of everything we do at Merciful Towing. On our customers’ worst days, we are the towing company that truly cares.
• What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Stay true to your values. Find people who share your passion to join your team. Always put quality customer care first.
• What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Strong work ethic, the ability to problem-solve, good people skills
• How many hours do you work a day on average?
Our industry is a 24/7 kind of business. Emergencies do not follow a 9-5 schedule. Because I have a great team, we are able to balance the workload so no one is overextended. I had to put more hours in the beginning when I was getting the business established.
• To what do you most attribute your success?
My focus on customer care really has driven the success of Merciful towing. There are plenty of tow services out there, but not as many that carry the same vision for compassionate customer care.
• What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
Serve your customers well, so they will keep calling and recommending your business. Find a team that shares your vision and can help grow your business. Scale your business up without losing sight of your values.
• Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
I expect that we will continue to grow and serve more and more motorists in our area. Our fleet and team will steadily grow to accommodate our expanding business.
• How important have good employees been to your success?
My employees are what makes my business possible. I cannot be there for every single customer, but I can send someone who carries the Merciful Towing name and vision.
• How long do you stick with an idea before giving up?
I stick with an idea until a better one comes along.
• What motivates you?
My team, my family, and customers in need
• What are your ideals?
Providing the compassionate care we would want for our own families, giving our best every time
• How do you generate new ideas?
We enjoy collaborating as a team to find new ideas.
• How do you define success?
Having the respect of my team, family, customers, and community, being able to support my life comfortably and enable my team to do the same, running my business without compromising my values
• How do you build a successful customer base?
By treating customers with respect and kindness, we build lasting relationships where our customers want to recommend us to their friends and family. Exceptional customer service is the key to having a successful customer base.

Having the freedom to run my business and my schedule how I choose.

• If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
I am who I am because of my background before starting Merciful Towing. I have a heart for compassionate customer care in a way that I might not have if I had not been working roadside emergencies before.
• How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
Although my life as an entrepreneur is busy, I have better control over my schedule. Also, I am happier and more fulfilled, which is beneficial for my family life too.
• How did you decide on the location for your business?
I live in this community, so I am dedicated to serving my community through providing professional and compassionate towing service.
• Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur?
