2 – Q) Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).
A) Dr. Kaisa Schmitz is a board-certified Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine physician. She specializes in weight management and is dedicated to promoting preventative health, working with patients to help them reach their wellness goals.
Dr. Schmitz initially trained and practiced within a comprehensive primary care setting. Throughout her 10+ years in this role, Dr. Schmitz saw many of her patients struggling with numerous weight-related health conditions, such as joint pain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and cancers. She knew there had to be a more productive and lasting method to treat and prevent these serious health issues patients were facing. So many of these chronic conditions were the result of a single, complicated culprit – excess weight.
D r. Schmitz pursued knowledge and specialty training in medical weight loss and became a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine in 2018. This specialty training provides the knowledge to create a comprehensive, evidence-based medical program designed to promote safe and effective weight loss without surgical intervention and provide the tools and support necessary to keep the weight off.
3 – Q) What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an
existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?
A) Unfortunately, the traditional medical clinic schedule leaves little time to dedicate to weight management in a thorough and effective manner. As a result, patients may experience inadequate treatment, limited guidance, lack of progress, and potential weight re-gain. They may also be tempted by fad diets or invest in costly supplements and ineffective programs that fail to deliver results, leaving patients feeling frustrated and discouraged. For these reasons, after years of seeing the joy of success in her patients, Dr. Schmitz established Revive Health Medica Weight Loss & Wellness to bridge the gap between primary care and the resources patients deserve to regain their health, once and for all. With her extensive medical background and experience, Dr. Schmitz is able to remain mindful of pre-existing conditions, partner with other members of your healthcare team, as well as assist in managing any new medical concerns that may arise throughout your weight loss journey. This ensures safety throughout the process.
4 – Q) What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
A) Surround yourself with others who carry a type of knowledge you do not have. Build a strong network and get comfortable collaborating with others. The sum of our skills will always surpass what any single person can accomplish on their own.
Be humble. Ask for help and guidance when needed and be open to change when things don’t go according to plan.
Function as a team or partnership with those you serve – Each person and relationship is different and will find success in different ways.
5 – Q) What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
A) Passion, work-ethic, and the ability to ask for and appreciate the support of others.
6 – Q) How many hours do you work a day on average?
A) 10
7 – Q) To what do you most attribute your success?
A) My upbringing.I was blessed with a loving family and a safe community. I was lucky enough to have a mother who cooked us healthy meals every night and a home where being active and working hard was expected. Life certainly wasn’t always perfect, but this foundation led me to a career serving others and pursuing my passions. I am very grateful.
8 – Q) How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
A) The vision of Revive Health isto be THE medical weight loss clinic ther heathcare providers trust to care for their patients struggling with weight-related health conditions. To this end, I have prioritized creating personal connections with other local healthcare professionals and increasing my online presence. As there are not many clinics like Revive Health in our area, increasing visibility and awareness is very important.
9 – Q) Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?
A) Revive Health was self-funded through savings over the years working in primary care.
10 – Q) What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
A) I don’t know that anyone has the perfect algorithm, but I would say long-term success depends upon sustainability. When working with my patients, I stress that long-term sustainability is the most important factor that needs to be considered when creating a successful treatment plan. I believe this to be true for most things, including your career, relationships, etc. For me, a work-life balance that allows time to “fill my cup” is as important as the time and effort I spend filling the cups of others. Working towards that balance is what keeps me loving my career and I know I am able to be a better physician because of it.
11 – Q) Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
A) I really see Revive Health as the resource other healthcare professionals will continue to turn to when patients need support treating weight-related health conditions. The science is there to support prioritizing the treatment of excess weight, rather than waiting to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, or weight-related cancers. Even for patients uneasy about the idea of medications to help with weight loss, we know that the use of one medication to prevent or reduce the use of many others should be a top priority. Unfortunately, the primary care setting is very busy and typically lacks the resources to support patients in their weight loss journey. Our medical specialists understand the importance of weight loss and recommend this to patients, however they typically are not the most effective resource to manage excess weight. A dedicated setting to treat excess weight with the time, energy, and expertise it deserves has shown to be more effective and I see this continuing to grow as an expectation of great of medical care.
12 – Q) Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
A) I have a new appreciation for all small business owners. It is a challenge that requires so manydifferent skillsets, creativity, and humility. I especially have respect for other physicians who have made the transition to private practice. Unlike many other healthcare professionals, business is not something we learn about in any capacity during our education. Those that have found success have been self-taught and have largely taken on the risk in an effort to connect with patients on a deeper, more in-depth level, and return the patient-physician relationship to what it used to be.
