Optik Eyewear was founded in 1982 and was originally established as Dr. Alan Frank. After opening several locations Dr. Alan Frank opened a complete eye care center in Kingston thatlater became Optik Eyewear in 2020. After 3 decades of meeting the needs of his community Dr Frank saw a big need for patients to get better access to unique eyewear. “ I simply did not feel forcing patients to wear products that looked basic and similar to what every ones was wearing was the best way to service my clients so I set on a mission to find the best independent eyewear lines and now I am the exclusive retailer of many new eyewear brands that Optik Eyewear has brought to our community.”

Dr Frank has been involved in all phases of optometric practice including evaluating diseases of the eyes, a focus on glaucoma and diabetic care. Dr Frank deals with patients of all ages including seniors and children which is one of the favorite parts of his practice. Dr. Frank is also an expert contact lens fitter and specializes in fitting patients with bifocal contact lenses. What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)?

Dr Frank saw that times were changing which is why he pivoted to upgrade his practice to better serve the visual needs and provide more of the latest
fashions in eyewear.

How did the idea for your business come about?

Dr Frank has always built his business to stay ahead of the curve and with such a gap in the market he knew he would be able to provide something special. With so many great styles and companies he wanted to be sure if a patient visited his office and selected eyewear that would sit on their face all day, they would be able to choose something they could be proud of and that expressed who they were as an individual.

What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?

1- Know how to get access to financial resources. 2- Know your market. 3- Have a nice accessible
location that is easy to get to.

What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Determination, longevity and adaptability. Confidence and believing yourself is key but
you also need to know when to bail.

How many hours do you work a day on average?

6 days a week and although he is
typically in the office 8 hours a day however it is not uncommon for Dr Frank to take a
call off hours and “meet his patient in the office impromptu”. He is a Dr that is always on call.

To what do you most attribute your success?

With a loyal patient following, I would say my patient care has been the biggest contributor to my success to date.

How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful
form of marketing?

I have recently rebuilt my website and have started developing a content strategy that allows me to connect to a larger audience within my community.
My most successful marketing was redesigning my store aesthetically and my website ot match so I can have a more consistent foundation to build on.

Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about
getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?

Self funded

What is the best way to achieve long-term success?

Be honest, do the best you can and make sure your patients are more important than the profits because patient care is your legacy and if you focus there, the money will come.

Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?

Dr Frank would like to build out his business 5x over the next 5-10 years and eventually afford the luxury of servicing the needs of more of the Kingston community that needs affordable eyewear. His goal is to grow but always maintain and intimate setting in his business.

Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?

Dr Blum he is a primary care provider. He takes the time to get to know his patients and always takes the extra time to understand his patients needs optometry. He is passionate about providing care to his patients and believes in the personal care that you can get from a private practice and not from a commercial establishment. He has been an active participant in all major vision plans including VSP, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Eye Med and many other programs. Dr Frank is actively involved with volunteers of medicine in which he does free eye exams for working professionals
that cant afford eyecare. He has previously served on the board of volunteers in medicine. He isnow involved in a program that has partnered with United Way to examine children in Wilkes Barre to give free eye exams to students in Wilkes Barre school district.
