Q 1. Kindly give our readers an introduction to your business. Please include what your business is all about, in which city you are located and if you have offices in multiple locations/ cities.
Ans: We are Double D Construction, a family-owned and operated business proudly serving our community since 1995. Based in Piscataway, we provide expert interior & exterior remodeling services across Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon, and the surrounding counties. From roofing, siding, windows, & doors to decks, bathrooms, & general repairs, we’re your one-stop shop for quality craftsmanship. Each of our crews specializes in their trade; roofers focus only on roofs, deck builders only on decks, ensuring true mastery of every project. Our mission is to deliver a 5-star experience with top-quality materials, expert installation, and outstanding customer service, all at an affordable price.
Q 2. Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).
Ans:I began my career in construction back in 1981, working for a local roofing company. Soon after, I became a union carpenter, where I learned the ins and outs of general construction. While continuing to do roofing work on weekends for several years, I eventually decided to take the leap and start my own construction company at the age of 28. Over time, we grew and expanded into a full-service general contracting business, handling all types of home improvement projects. In addition to running the construction company, we also developed a business management software (CRM) designed specifically for contractors. Although we’ve since sold the software company, we continue to use it to efficiently manage our own operations today.
Q 3. What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?
Ans: I’ve always had a true passion for construction and customer service. Early in my career, I didn’t like how I was treated working for others, and when I started my own company, I made a vow never to treat my employees the same way. My philosophy has always been that my employees work with me, not for me. That mindset has been a key factor in our success, and it’s why many of my team members have been with the company for over 15 years.
Q 4. What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Ans: First, I would say to surround yourself with a strong team. You should know your trade inside and out, but don’t try to do everything yourself. You’ll deliver better results having a team of skilled professionals who specialize in different areas.
Second, I would say to put the customers first. High quality work isn’t enough by itself. What separates you from your competitors is customer service. Clear communication, reliability and respect go a long way. Making customers feel valued turns into repeat business and referrals.
Lastly, I would say to stay consistent and committed. Building a strong business takes time and doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient and stay consistent with you standards. Over time, your reputation will become your strongest asset.
Q 5. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Ans: Leadership – A business succeeds when everyone is motivated and working towards the same goal.
People Skills – Being able to talk to anyone; clients, employees, vendors or partners.
Adaptability – Challenges change constantly. Stay flexible and adjust quickly.
Q 6. How many hours do you work a day on average?
Ans: 10 hours a day; 6 days a week.
Q 7. To what do you most attribute your success?
Ans: It all starts with family. My parents were the hardest workers I’ve ever known, and they instilled in me the value of earning everything I received. That upbringing taught me the true meaning of hard work and the deep sense of gratitude that comes from achieving something you’ve worked hard for.
Q 8. How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
Ans: For us, it has always been word-of-mouth and referrals. Satisfied clients recommending us to friends, family, and neighbors is by far the best way to grow our business. We have also had success on social media, sharing project photos and testimonials to showcase our work and reach new customers.
Q 09. Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?
Ans: I started out buying a pickup and a ladder. As the company grew, I began hiring employees and continued to expand our fleet.
Q 10. What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
Ans: Focusing on quality, consistency and build strong relationships. Deliver excellent work every single time, maintain high standards, and treat clients, employees and partners with respect.
Q 11. Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
Ans: I will remain actively involved in the company for as long as I am able. My goal is always to continue scaling and pushing the business forward.
Q 12. Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
Ans: I would say Amazon; they set the standard for efficiency and convenience. Their innovative technology and fast, reliable delivery make shopping seamless and stress-free for customers everywhere. They have transformed the way people shop.
Q 13. How important have good employees been to your success?
Ans: It has been crucial to my business that my employees work WITH me, not just FOR me. Because of this approach, many of my team members have been with me for 15 years or more. I make it a priority to create a work environment where no one wakes up dreading their day – no “Sunday Scaries” or “Monday Blues”.
Q 14. How do you build a successful customer base?
Ans: You need a 5-star experience; from start to finish. Focus on quality, trust and relationships. Be consistent; I make sure every project or service exceeds expectations, and I communicate openly and honestly with my customers. By consistently delivering great results and treating customers with respect, I earn repeat business and referrals, which is the foundation of a strong, long-term customer base.
Q 15. What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Ans: My most satisfying moment is ongoing. Seeing my team grow and stay with me long-term. It’s not just all about profits – it’s about building a culture that people genuinely enjoy being a part of.
Q 16. What do you feel is the major difference between entrepreneurs and those who work for someone else?
Ans: Entrepreneurs take full ownership of their success and failures, making decisions that directly shape their business. Employees have defined roles which provide structure but limits control and impact.
Q 17. What kind of culture exists in your organization? How did you establish this tone and why did you institute this particular type of culture?
Ans: This goes right along with the first question about the importance of having good employees. It’s all about partnership and purpose. Treating my team as collaborators, not just employees. I create an open line of communication, respecting my teams’ ideas and always being their suggestions.
