- Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).
Dr. Whitney Fose was born and (mostly) raised in the suburbs of Chicago, received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001 and her Medical Degree from Rush Medical College in 2005. After finishing her pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in 2008, she moved back to Chicagoland to settle in as a pediatrician in a large group practice. After 14 years, she knew something needed to change! She moved with her husband, Vince, and their two girls, Penny and Sadie, here to Woodstock, Georgia for better weather and fresh start professionally. She enjoyed a year practicing with a small group in the area before deciding to take the leap into opening her own practice!
Dr. Whitney’s approach to patient care is collaborative and child-centered. She prefers communicating directly with the child when age-appropriate and meeting them where they are (even if she needs to do their exam on the floor under the table!). She practices evidence-based medicine whenever possible, but is also a realist and will offer solutions that work for each unique family situation. Oh, and she loves having fun with kids and telling corny jokes!
With a particular passion for the science of human lactation and the art of breastfeeding, Dr. Whitney has sought additional training in lactation care and has recently been certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Lactation services are included with membership, and are offered in the comfort of home as part of the Fourth Trimester Package.
When not playing doctor, she can be found spending time with her family, running, reading, crocheting, singing at church, or acting in a community theater production.
- What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?
Peach Blossom Pediatrics was born out of my desire to provide better care to my patients. After 15 years in traditional corporate-style medicine, I grew disenchanted with its ever-expanding limitations. The expectation to see higher volume and meet arbitrary metrics was not only exhausting for me, but more importantly, it significantly negatively impacted my ability to care for my patients and their families in the way I felt they deserved.
- What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
TAKE THE LEAP! You don’t have to have it 100% figured out. You’ll learn through trial and error what works and what doesn’t. If you have the passion, the rest will follow.
NETWORK! With others who have similar businesses, so that you can collaborate, support and learn from one another. But also with businesses that complement yours and can become referral sources. Social media can only get you so far; boots on the ground, shaking hand and kissing babies (sometimes literally!), will get you more bang for your buck.
You WILL have to EXIT YOUR COMFORT ZONE!
- What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Courage, passion, and excellent communication skills
- How many hours do you work a day on average?
It varies widely, but probably averages out to around 8-10 hours per day
- To what do you most attribute your success?
The support of my family/friends, others who’ve opened similar practices, and the local birthing/pediatric provider community
- How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
I’ve dabbled in a lot of methods: print ads (not a great ROI), social media posts/ads (some traction there), but in-person networking and word of mouth have brought the most success.
- Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?
Loans. Lots of loans. And I still don’t pay myself yet, so expenses aren’t too high yet. I moonlight at urgent care to help support my family until the business really takes off.
- What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
Don’t let the hurdles and setbacks that come your way completely derail you. Keep pushing forward and believe in your end-game.
- Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
I see the practice thriving with healthy patients, happy families, and financially prosperous enough for me to make a comfortable living. I don’t envision or desire growth that is expansive enough to want to hire another physician, but I’m open to that possibility.
- Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
