A. Kevin Sanders is the owner of Dry Otter Waterproofing Inc. He attended Belmont Abbey College on a soccer scholarship and graduated with a business degree. Kevin started his career in waterproofing in 1993 as an installer and has personally installed over 4000 basement and crawl space waterproofing systems. During his career he has handled all aspects of the business including inspections, sales, service, and production with great success. Kevin’s experience and vision allow Dry Otter to apply the appropriate waterproofing or moisture solution to a homeowner’s basement and crawl space issues.
Q. What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?
A. Having worked at several other waterproofing companies and gained considerable knowledge in the industry, I wanted to achieve some personal and business goals that were not directly available working for another company.
Q. What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
A. 1. Create a solid business plan to the finest details available focusing on sales and marketing. Execute, modify, adapt that plan to the changing demands of the business.
2. Create time specific goals that support your business plan.
3. Find a successful business mentor and utilize their knowledge and experience.
Q. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
A. Sales, Money Management, Leadership.

A. 10 hours

A. Hiring great people and placing them in the best position to be successful.
Q. How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
A. We utilize print ads, internet marketing, and networking. Networking and referrals have been our most successful source of business.
Q. Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?
A. We are primarily self-funded but have several trusted friends and mentors that contributed based on their confidence in our future success.
Q. What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
A. Never stop learning and improving yourself and the results.
Q. Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
A. As a company our goal is to be the industry leader for residential and small business waterproofing in our area. Personally, I hope to be doing a lot more fishing relying on great managers and employees to handle the day to day operations of the business.
