An Interview with The Owner of Thicket

  • Kindly give our readers an introduction to your business. Please include what your business is all about, in which city you are located and if you have offices in multiple locations/ cities. Brand thicket was created to bring innovative and creative design to the smoke industry market. We are located currently in Chino CA
  • Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements). I am 43 years old. Started as a 12yrs old kid working at my parents video stores, when I turned 18 worked at the video store and Robinsons May as a sales associate. Then worked at UPS for 6months as a unloader then got promoted as a air supervisor for 9yrs. Got my Bachelors degree in business and started working at Target as a Logistics Manager 2yrs. Then went to work for a start up called Xpal Power but went out of business 2yrs later and started working at Markwins International as an Operation Manager. Within all these companies got numerous awards and promotions.
  • What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about? When I turned 40yrs old hit a mid life crisis as I wanted more and was bored in my field. I always been a functional stoner and dreamed in my young teens to be in this industry. So I gave a 6 month notice to my company that I was very close with. And when I left I flew to China the next month to start my new journey.
  • What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs? 1. Have a clear vision for what you want to achieve. 2. SWOT Analysis (Do your homework!) 3. Go for it. Somebody quote that still resonates when I first started “ To be able at any moment to sacrifice what you are for what you will become.”
  • What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? 1. Hard work (out work everyone) 2. Drive (Need to have the drive to do what ever it takes to make your vision a reality. 3. Passion (love the field that you do as you’re an entrepreneur.) Why else would you want to go through the difficulty?
  • How many hours do you work a day on average? 24/7 Sounds very cliché but true. There is no real time off as your world revolves around work(Vision).
  • To what do you most attribute your success? Just having a clear vision of what you want to achieve.
  • How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing? I first started by hiring an employee to do my videos for social media page. Two months into launch my thicket went viral on tiktok. After that I tried to have marketing companies help but what works best for me is having an in house social media person. Other companies are now tagging me on Instagram with there videos of my products.
  • Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture? First funding was from a former business partner that owned multiple investments across multiple industries. He saw my first glass designs and wanted to invest. After a year, however he wanted out as the industry I’m in was going to interfere with his other core businesses. After a couple of weeks of multiple potential investor meetings that saw the vision we picked another investor for future product investment.
  • What is the best way to achieve long-term success? For me is to keep innovating and creating new designs along with new brands.
  • Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years? I see myself running multiple brands in the next 5 years as next year I am launching 2 new brands.
  • Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most? My mentor who owns the numerous brands in this industry such as. US Yocan, Camo wraps, bdd wholesale etc.

  • What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur? Freedom
  • What has been your most satisfying moment in business? Recognition
  • What do you feel is the major difference between entrepreneurs and those who work for someone else? Your either working for yourself or someone else.
  • What kind of culture exists in your organization? How did you establish this tone and why did you institute this particular type of culture? Relaxed but still have to meet goals as this is the marijuana business.

  • How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life? It has affected it very positively as I have time to do whatever and whenever with family included sports events etc.
  • What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear? Not providing for my family the level they are use to.
  • How did you decide on the location for your business? Down the street from my house.
  • Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur? Just go for it.
