Q 1.    Kindly give our readers an introduction to your business. Please include what your business is all about, in which city you are located and if you have offices in multiple locations/ cities.

Ans:    Jill G. Lowe, PA is a marital and family law firm located in Tampa, Florida.  The firm provides non-litigation services to individuals and families in divorce or other family law related matters.  The practice areas include only collaborative divorce and mediation and guardian ad litem.  Our goal is to minimize the post-divorce effects on families and to help parties resolve their differences in an amicable and less costly manner.

Q 2.    Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).

Ans:    Jill Lowe is Board Certified in Marital and Family Law, which means she is recognized by the Florida Bar as a specialist in marital and family law.  Jill is also a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator.  She was selected to the 2016 Rising Stars, an honor reserved for those lawyers who exhibit excellence in practice.  Only 2.5% of attorneys in Florida receive this distinction.  Jill graduated from Stetson University College of Law, cum laude, and she obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Central Florida.

Q 3.    What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?

Ans:    About two years ago I was diagnosed with cancer.  At the time I was diagnosed I had not found the balance in my life.  I was representing clients in litigation cases, which is much more stressful than collaborative divorce or mediation.  I had been working as a litigation attorney for about ten years at the time I had been diagnosed.  After I finished treatments and surgery I decided I needed to change the direction of my business.  And so I have decided to not represent clients in litigation cases, and only represent them in collaborative divorce.  I would think that clients would want to only handle their divorce in the collaborative setting or in mediation if I have decided not only represent clients in those settings.

Q 4.    What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?

Ans:    Find and keep balance in your life.  It’s hard to juggle starting a business and family, but find a way to balance it all.  Also, don’t cut corners.  You will end up regretting those decisions.  Lastly, don’t be afraid to change paths or start something new.  Change is a good thing.

Q 5.    What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

Ans:    Ability to listen, courage, and organization.

Q 6.    How many hours do you work a day on average?

Ans:    40 hours.

Q 7.    To what do you most attribute your success?

Ans:    My ability to listen to criticism and be willing to make changes when necessary.  I have always been able to reflect on my abilities.  Also, setting realistic goals.  I am very goal oriented and I think that has helped to keep me on track.

Q 8.    How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?

Ans:    Face to face meetings.  People do business with those they like and have a relationship with.  Don’t burn bridges because it will come back to you.  So, maintain healthy relationships with others.

Q 9.    Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?

Ans:    No investors.

Q 10.    What is the best way to achieve long-term success?

Ans:    Set goals and periodically review them.  Place deadlines on your goals.

Q 11.    Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?

Ans:    Hopefully the go-to law firm in Tampa for collaborative divorce and mediation.  I would like to change the way individuals and families handle their family law matters by treating each other with respect and dignity and amicably.

Q 12.    Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?

Ans:    My father’s business D. Garrett Construction, Inc.  He started the business with nothing and over the years the company has grown to the go-to business in Southwest Florida for construction.
