An Interview with Tim Maycock – SCOPRO Smart Coaching Products, LLC

by | Oct 13, 2023 | Business

Executive Summary

SCOPRO: Smart Coaching Products was created in 2009 to give soccer coaches the best coaching products to allow coaches to successfully coach in games and practice. As coaches ourselves, we were not satisfied with both the quality and functionality of the current coaching products on the market. SCOPRO was trying to create products that were designed by coaches for coaches. Our first product the Gameday Notepad was launched in 2009. Within 7 months SCOPRO was able to sell enough notepads to create some revenue to start production of our next product the Numbered Magnets. The Number Magnet was such a huge success that we sold out in 1 month. With the revenue stream of the magnet sales, along with bringing in an investor Reid Raukar (Friend), SCOPRO was able to launch its first coaching board with a carrying case in 2012. SCOPRO today has 3 different Notepad options that can be customized to your liking, a tactical board, a carrying case, and 9 different color options for Magnets to match your club colors.

What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (make significant changes in an existing business)?

Tim has always had an entrepreneurial spirit with the aspiration to own his own business. Coaching soccer has given him an understanding of what coaches need to coach the game and has allowed him the time to run the business at the same time.

How did the idea for your business come about?

The business started with our first product, the Gameday Notepad. At the time there was not a great notepad on the market so SCOPRO created one. The notepad became a hit and allowed SCOPRO to grow and produce other products like the numbered magnet and the coaching boards.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

The greatest inspiration was his college coach at Sonoma State University. He allowed Tim to become a coach and have a career in the game of soccer.

What makes you different from other businesses in your industry?

I think that our quality and functionality are unmatched in the industry. Our boards are constructed to be lightweight yet durable with a case too easily transports the boards while protecting them. The magnets are top in the industry with a strong hold while freely moving on the board.

To what do you most attribute your success?

By far for us is our customer service. We love to hear from our customers and we love to take of them. If things happen to go wrong we are quick to fix them.

What do you think is the best way to achieve long-term success in business?

For us, it is to build relationships with our customers. Have the best customer service while having a product that our customers are proud to use and share with their peers.

Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?

The goal is to grow into other sports besides soccer. To continue to produce more quality products to help coaches grow.

Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?

A company that we appreciate is Mission belts because they started with a very niche product that has grown into a multi-million dollar company. Their model is similar to ours.

Who is your target demographic?

The target demographic is anywhere in the USA where soccer is being played. We have sold our products in every state. The most popular would be Northern California, Southern California, and Texas.

Please list 3-5 talking points about your business that you feel are most relevant to your target audience.

-Soccer Coaches
-Soccer Clubs
-Soccer Players

What are your overall thoughts on your industry? Any advice you could give people about your industry?

The industry we are in has quite a few products but most lack quality and functionality. With that being said there is potential to grow and excel in the industry.

Is your business involved with any charitable organizations, social causes, or non-profit work?

SCOPRO has donated to several Child Cancer groups. This one hits home because a close friend of SCOPRO lost his 8-year-old girl to a Brain Tumor.

How do you give back and support your community?

Every year SCOPRO donates money to whatever club Tim is working for to sponsor players who can not afford to play soccer. Many of them have ended up playing in college.

How important have good employees been to your success?

The goal is to grow large enough to have employees.

What motivates you?

Motivation comes from helping coaches get the proper tools to be a successful coach. SCOPRO wants every coach in America to have their coaching products in their hands.

How do you generate new ideas?

By building relationships with customers and listening to their concerns and ideas of products.

How do you define success?

Success comes from producing a product that their customers can not go without. Giving the customers tools to have the highest success.

How do you build a successful customer base?

Having relationships with customers and providing them with quality products. Keeping customers come from understanding that things can go wrong and you need to take care of them at all cost.

What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

The flexibility to live the lifestyle you choose to live. To have the freedom to make your own decisions and not have to deal with bosses and also the time you get to spend with friends and family when needed.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

Selling the first Gameday Notepad and realizing that is possible to become an actual business.

If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?

Not wait to produce other products even if it meant taking out a loan. Also paying for the proper marketing scheme.

What is your greatest fear in business, and how do you manage fear?

No doubt is losing everything and not having money to move forward.

How did you decide on the location for your business?

This is based on where I live since I operate out of the home.
