• Kindly give our readers an introduction to your business. Please include what your business is all about, in which city you are located and if you have offices in multiple locations/ cities.
We are a family owned and operated paint company in Thornton, CO. We provide residential and commercial paint work. Specializing in residential repaint work. We service most of the front range.
• Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).
I have been in the paint industry since 1991. We have been in business since 2004. I have an amazing family, married for 23 years, 2 kids who are becoming successful young adults. My family is my greatest, proudest achievement.
• What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?
We are making changes in our marketing, presence in the community. We have been an old school word of mouth type of business with great success. Now we feel it’s time to change it up by entering the online community.
• What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Work your ass off, you don’t have to know everything- be honest about it, Fear is ok, embrace it and let it drive you.
• What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Work ethic, communication and discipline.
• How many hours do you work a day on average?
As many as it takes. Varies depending on daily needs. Our industry doesn’t really have the luxury of set hours.
• To what do you most attribute your success? Lots of things.
Faith, hard work, little luck. Mostly an amazing team with the same standards and values working towards a common goal. We succeed together because we work together.
• How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing? We have always been word of mouth.
We have grown because of the quality people we work with. Without the outstanding people we have we wouldn’t have grown. They have allowed it to grow far beyond what should have been possible from just word of mouth and no other marketing.
• Where did your organization’s funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?
Self funded. Work and reinvest.
• What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
Say what you do, do what you say. Know your industry and constantly learn. Most importantly communication.
• Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
Bigger. Natural evolution would be to have our current team grow into bigger and better roles, which means we all need to grow and expand together. Possibly into another area.
• Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
To be honest I try not to pay attention to other companies too much. I am not sure that this is good or bad, We simply move forward with the mindset of keeping the best interests of our customers and team members at the forefront.
• How important have good employees been to your success?
They are everything. Without a strong team you have nothing.
• How long do you stick with an idea before giving up?
Varies could be months, years or minutes. I try to trust my gut and it’s served me well.
• What motivates you?
Providing. We provide a great service, which in turn provides great careers for our teams and then provides for our families.
• How do you generate new ideas?
Randomly. Could be while stressing or driving. But mostly random thoughts.
• How do you define success?
I am not sure I have. I am never satisfied, which is a weakness of sorts because I don’t stop to enjoy the small things.
• How do you build a successful customer base?
It’s cliche, outstanding service and communication. Treating every project with the same level of importance. People remember your authenticity and it usually comes back in the future.
• What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Watching guys that have been with us for 10 years get married, buy houses and have kids. We grow together.
• What do you feel is the major difference between entrepreneurs and those who work for someone else?
Care. We come across as arrogant asses sometimes, but we care. Care about the customers, employees, business and everything else. We care that everyone is getting taken care of.
• What kind of culture exists in your organization? How did you establish this tone and why did you institute this particular type of culture?
That we are a team, we succeed and fail together. None of us can do what we do without the other. It came natural to me. I can’t take credit for the hard work that they do. I have always understood this.
• In one word, characterize your life as an entrepreneur.
Controlled chaos
• If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?

Failure, by trying harder, learning and trying to adpt.

Being in a service industry we go where the work is. Former clients call when they move to a new home and this grows our service area.

Sure, but once you get away from the basics of hard work and discipline. Everyone’s pattern varies.
