1. **What sets your organization apart from others in the industry?**
Memory Lane focuses solely on dementia care, providing a more personalized experience than larger facilities. We offer small, six-bedroom homes where residents live in familiar, comfortable settings with highly individualized care. Our staff-to-resident ratio is among the best in the industry—1:3 during the day and 1:6 at night—ensuring that each resident gets the attention they deserve.
2. **What motivated you to start this business?**
I started Memory Lane because I saw a need for a more human-centric, personalized approach to dementia care. Large corporate facilities can feel cold and impersonal, and I wanted to create a space where residents feel truly at home and cared for by people who understand their unique needs.
3. **What challenges did you face while starting the business, and how did you overcome them?**
One of the biggest challenges was finding the right balance between a homelike environment and the medical care required for dementia patients. We overcame this by hiring compassionate, well-trained caregivers and ensuring that each home offers both safety and comfort. Expanding to multiple homes also took time, but we managed it by growing slowly and ensuring we maintained our high standards.
4. **What three pieces of advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?**
– Understand your customers’ needs deeply and design your services around them.
– Build a team that shares your passion and values, as they will be your greatest asset.
– Be patient with growth; success takes time, especially in healthcare.
5. **What skills do you believe are the most important to be a successful entrepreneur and business owner?**
Compassion and leadership are essential, especially in the care industry. You need to lead by example, and that starts with genuinely caring about your residents and your staff.
6. **How many hours do you work a day on average?**
As the owner, I’m involved in many aspects of the business, so I typically work around 10-12 hours per day, depending on what’s needed.
7. **What do you enjoy most about the business?**
Seeing the positive impact we have on families and residents. When a family member tells me how much their loved one’s quality of life has improved, it reminds me why we do what we do.
8. **How do you approach marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?**
Our best marketing comes from word of mouth and referrals. We also focus on online reviews and maintaining an informative website, as families often research extensively before choosing a care home. Tours and consultations have also been very effective.
9. **What has been your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?**
Expanding to three homes, each providing the same level of high-quality care, has been a major milestone. We’ve built a strong reputation in the Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor areas, which I’m very proud of.
10. **What is the best way to achieve long-term success?**
Consistency in delivering excellent care is key. We maintain our high standards by continuously training staff and listening to feedback from residents and their families.
11. **Where do you see yourself and your business in 5-10 years?**
I see Memory Lane expanding to more homes while maintaining the same small, close-knit environment. I’d like to serve more communities while continuing to focus on personalized, loving care for dementia patients.
12. **Looking back, what company or business do you admire the most?**
I admire companies that have stayed true to their values while scaling, especially those in the healthcare industry. Companies like Mayo Clinic, which have a strong commitment to patient care and innovation, are a great example of what I strive to achieve.
