Q:- Kindly give our readers an introduction to your business. Please include what your business is all about, in which city you are located and if you have offices in multiple locations/ cities.
Answer: SpotOnFire was designed to give new and struggling musicians a cost-effective boost to their media marketing efforts in order to help get them noticed. We do not have a headquarters or staff. We use contractors for some development work.
Q:- Kindly give us a brief description about yourself (it should include your brief educational or entrepreneurial background and list some of your major achievements).
Answer: I went to school for marketing and business administration. But then I got into website design and development. I found that those four disciplines made a really great combination. After college, I worked for several small marketing firms learning the business and honing my skills.
Q:-What inspired you to (start a new business venture) or (to make significant changes in an existing business)? How did the idea for your business come about?
Answer: We purchased this business from the former owner because we saw a lot of potential and have experience in marketing and automating process flows.
Q:-What three pieces of advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Answer:
- Take a break. There’s only so much you can do in a day so don’t get overwhelmed and stressed out if you’re not making as much progress as you think you should.
- Get some help. Entrepreneurs are expected to be able to do everything but that’s not really the goal. Hire good people to do the things that you’re not great at.
- Trust but verify. Just because you have good people doesn’t mean that you should let them run free. Keep everyone focused on the goal.
Q:-What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Answer:
- Unlimited time would be nice, but a well-planned to-do list will keep you from getting off-track. Create your to-do list the night before so that you’re not tempted to stray from it. Anything that comes up during the day needs to go on tomorrow’s to-do list. Don’t let other people control your schedule.
- Patience. You, and your staff, don’t know everything. Be patient as you both learn together. Hire experts if you’re spinning your wheels.
- Keep a close eye on the financials. It’s boring, but it’s important.
Q:-How many hours do you work a day on average?
Answer: I typically work around 50 hours per week.
Q:-To what do you most attribute your success?
Answer: Good luck is an amazing asset if you can get it. I’ve been lucky enough to have a good education, good experience, and good prospects. I’ve worked hard, obviously, but I feel like I’ve been luckier than most.
Q:-How do you go about marketing your business? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
Answer: We are still in the early stages, but Search Engine Optimization and word-of-mouth have been the most effective so far.
Q:-Where did your organizations funding/capital come from and how did you go about getting it? How did you obtain investors for your venture?
Answer: This business hasn’t required funding or investors.
Q:-What is the best way to achieve long-term success?
Answer: Staying ahead of the competition. We are a new player in the market but we’re doing pretty good so far. We just need to innovate and market better and smarter than our competitors. Automation will help us tremendously in the coming months.
Q:-Where you see yourself and your business in 5 – 10 years?
Answer: In 5-10 years, I plan on selling the business. I get bored with projects after I’ve optimized them, so I like to sell.
Q:-Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
Answer: I don’t have a specific company that I admire, but I do admire people that work a full-time job during the day and try to build a side-business at night and on weekends. Especially if they have a family and other obligations. People that can run on 4 hours of sleep amaze me. I need my 8 hours of sleep each night.
Q:-How important have good employees been to your success?
Answer: We don’t have any full-time employees right now, but we do use some contractors to help here and there.
Q:-How long do you stick with an idea before giving up?
Answer: We are tenacious, but reasonable. We probably spend too much time on an idea before giving up.
Q:-What motivates you?
Answer: Helping young and struggling musicians motivates us, for sure, but automating, tuning, and honing a website is what really drives us.
Q:-How do you define success?
Answer: Simple…if revenue is greater than expenses and happiness is greater than sadness, then that’s a successful project.
Q:-How do you build a successful customer base?
Answer: Concentrate more on your existing customers than you do on finding new customers. The existing customers will help you find new customers and the experience will help you retain them all.
Q:-What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
Answer: I get to make my own hours. I’m not a morning person.
Q:-What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
AAnswer: Getting that first sale after you purchase a website is a really satisfying moment. There’s always some trepidation when you buy a website from someone. Were they lying about revenues? Was I diligent enough in asking questions and verifying everything? It’s nerve-racking until you get that first sale.
Q:- What do you feel is the major difference between entrepreneurs and those who work for someone else?
Answer: Risk. There’s nothing wrong with working a full-time job. But there’s no daily risk to keep you “alive”. As an entrepreneur, you experience risk daily and it’s invigorating.
Q:-If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
Answer: I would have skipped college and went with untraditional routes of education. The cost of education is prohibitive to the entrepreneur life.
Q:-How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
Answer: I’ve been lucky that I can work a mostly normal workweek and still have time for family.
Q:-What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?
Answer: Not finishing my goal. I can handle delays in reaching my goals, but not complete failure. I work hard every day to ensure that I’m on track, even if it’s going to take longer than expected.
Q:-Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur?
Answer: I never intended to be an entrepreneur. I was just lucky and “fell into it.” But, it could have very easily turned out different for me. I think that you can do whatever you put your mind to and that’s what I was able to do. I just had less obstacles than most.
